What do the Election Results Mean for Casco Bay?

A letter from Executive Director Will Everitt and Casco BAYKEEPER Ivy Frignoca

Like many, we are reflecting on last week’s election and what it means for our work to improve and protect the environmental health of Casco Bay. For 35 years, through Republican and Democratic administrations, we have worked with you to care for Casco Bay.

We value and cherish our members and supporters across the political spectrum who recognize that clean water and a healthy Casco Bay are not political issues. Clean marine waters are fundamental to our way of life and to the countless animals and plants that reside in Casco Bay.

Based on the last Trump administration and his recent campaign statements, we anticipate repeals of federal clean water and climate change regulations and funding in the next two to four years. Whenever there has been a lack of leadership at the federal level on environmental issues, we have looked with renewed vigor to what we can do in response at the state and local levels. We will continue to collect unbiased, high-quality data to guide our actions, allowing us to address pollution and shine a light on climate change concerns.

Community-driven action to protect and strengthen Casco Bay’s health has always been at the heart of our work. Regardless of national leadership, the responsibility of caring for our waters lies with engaged local residents. From the Clean Water Act and recycling programs, to microplastics and PFAS laws, some of our most foresighted environmental protections were driven by Mainers like you.

Thank you for your ongoing support. Your commitment is more important than ever as we work together to protect Casco Bay. Please continue to help us by:

  • Volunteering: We are always looking for more Water Reporters who help us keep an eye on the health of the Bay. We also depend on volunteers to help us at events and around the office.

  • Make a donation: We will put your gift to good use as we continue to improve and protect our coastal waters.

  • Attending an event: Connect with other local residents who, like you, want to learn more about the issues facing our waters and what we can do together.

Please feel free to reach out with questions or comments. Thank you for being a Friend of Casco Bay.

With appreciation,
